Kicking it Old School in your Apartment

Kicking it Old School in your Apartment

Rumor has it that you like to kick it “Old School” style. Well, why not let your Apartment reflect it?

There are a number of really cool and inexpensive things that you can grab to give your apartment a little “Old School” Flava’. If you’ve been thinking about doing some cool things with your apartment that take you back and now you may have a little gift cash or gift cards to spend, consider some of the following:

Nintendo Power - No, I’m not talking about the silly video game magazine that kids used to ache for in the 80′s. Rather, I’m talking about setting yourself up with a system that can play all the old games like Mario Brothers, Tetris, and Zelda. A system like the FC Top Loading Nintendo System that will play all of your old school NES cartridges without any errors. This little machine is really sweet! I recently got one and it works incredibly. I have been trying to break my old records on all my games since…..except…now I’m playing them on a BIG SCREEN!

Bottles and Cans….Just Slap Your Hands- Seriously. Hit up thrift stores, junk shops, and E-Bay for cool looking old bottles like the 80′s glass Dr. Pepper bottles or other stuff like that. You can find a ton of great stuff that you can line the top of your cabinets or window sill with that will help with that old school flavor.

Boom Box- And I am not even joking. No apartment can really be classified as “Old School” if it doesn’t have a boom box that is easily carry able over one shoulder as you stroll down the street!

Movies!!!- Okay…so….there is no justification for keeping old VHS tapes around, but….start expanding your DVD collection to include the movies that really ring true for the 80′s and 90′s. You can grab a ton of DVD’s like The Goonies, Weekend at Bernies, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, Rambo, and Die Hard for really cheap at most electronic stores. And come on…you can watch these over and over again…can’t you? I know I can and I make my friends too!

T-Shirts and Album Covers - Get to a craft store and buy a few matching frames. Then dig through your closet, head to a thrift store, and search online for Old School t-shirts and album covers. You can frame these timeless treasures and throw them up on one of your walls to create a retro-walls that is sort of like a museum of cool. You could also search for old toys like GI Joe’s, Ninja Turtles, M.U.S.C.L.E.S., Barbies, and Care Bears to line some shelves with and show your appreciation for the classics. My buddy, Schultz, framed all of his old Garbage Pail Kids. It looks really cool.

Dormitory Studio Decor Ideas: Keep Clutter At Bay

I think the key to dorm décor ideas is color – bright colors which give clean lines such as navy and white or lemon and lime. Find a beaded doorway curtain to hang up at your window to reflect the light and lay some brightly colored rugs on the floor. Choose brightly colored hand-made throws to drape around your window recess and over your chair or bed. There are two absolute ‘must-haves’ for your dorm room: firstly, one of the small microwaves by Sharps – these come in a number of attractive colors. The second ‘must-have’ is a foldaway ironing board. This is an absolute find – it is a full-size ironing board but is made to fold down really small, with little legs – designed to stand on top of your desk. You can find it at householdgoods.com. Another excellent idea is the halogen oven from JML Direct.com. This retails at around $61.00, or thereabouts and, with the halogen oven, you can cook absolutely anything. (more…)
