Preformed Garden Ponds – An Easy Way To Improve Your Garden’s Decor

For anyone who wishes to bring more wildlife into their backyard or who would like to improve the decor of their garden one of the best and easiest things you can do is add a preformed garden pond.
You can find plenty of inexpensive kits which are also easy to relocate should it become necessary. Preformed garden ponds are created by using a composite material.
When you get ready to install your pond, the first thing you have to do is dig a hole where your pond will be and then you put your garden pond liner into the hole. Afterword, you will be able to decorate the pond by placing rocks, various kinds of plants, and maybe a log or two around the pond to give it a more natural appearance.
Anytime you install a preformed garden pump you also have to include a pump to circulate the water. For this reason, you may want to put your pond close to your house so you won’t have to use as much wire. However, if you don’t mind spending some extra money, you can place your pond wherever you like. Whenever you use electricity around water there is a chance of getting a shock, so I suggest you install a ground fault interrupter, or GFI, into the pump’s circuitry.
You need to inspect your property for low areas to keep rainwater runoff from getting into your pond. The last thing you want to do is put your pond in a part of your garden which is lower than the rest. If you put your pond in a low lying spot, lawn chemicals, such as fertilizers, can be washed into your garden pond and contaminate it.

]]>

Try to avoid this whenever possible. If you plan out the location of your pond ahead of time, it can keep you from having to move it later on. Depending on where your plants are located in your garden, you may need to relocate some of them away from your pond. If you have large trees or if there are tree roots growing in the location of your pond you will probably have to move your pond somewhere else. If you don’t want to put your pond somewhere else, you will have to cut the tree roots and then put something in place to prevent them from growing back. It is best to not cut the tree down because it will create some nice shade for your pond.
When you are ready to install the pond liner, just place it on the ground in the location where your pond will be. Get some wooden stakes and hammer them vertically into the ground around the outside of the liner. Take some string or rope and wrap it around the base of the stakes to form an outline of the liner.
When you’ve done that, take the pond liner and move it to side so it will be out of the way and start digging the hole for your pond. Make sure to keep the sides of the hole vertical. Now take your liner and place it in the hole.
Find a straight piece of wood and place it across the liner then, using a carpenter’s level, check the level of the pond liner. Then turn the wood 90 degrees and check the level in the other direction.
Put sand into the hole under the liner and the sides of the liner and make sure you pack it in nice and tight. This will support the pond liner in the hole. When you are done packing the sand in, re-check the level of the pond in both directions to make sure it is still level.
When you are done with that you can start to decorate your new garden pond. You can plant some vegetation around it and place a few stones to give it a more natural appearance. An easy and inexpensive way to make preformed garden ponds look great at night is to use solar powered lights.
Since they are solar powered, there are no wires to hide and you can easily move them around the pond until you get it to look just right. The fact that they won’t add to your electricity bill is a plus. Some people like to place a layer of pebbles in the bottom of their new pond to give it a more natural look.

Creative Water Gardens

A Landscape Masterpiece

A backyard garden pond is the kind of structure that can turn your average backyard into a landscape masterpiece. Water garden ponds often times are considered to be the centerpiece of a yard. As the variety of inexpensive water garden kits increase in the market, water garden features are becoming more popular to the public. Water garden ponds were only a luxury in the past for only those who could afford them. However, with the current landscape water features available today and with the efforts of home owners, building perfect landscaping water features has become a luxury for all.

Unfortunately, the rush of home owners to integrate ponds into their home landscaping, several DIY’ers have made mistakes. Building a backyard garden pond is not as easy as the market has made it out to be. There are several important factors to take into account before and during water garden construction. The following are some guidelines on how to build perfect landscaping water features the smart way. Remembering these key points will help in reducing those mistakes that DIY’ers usually make.

Tips and Tricks

First, let your backyard decide. The first question that comes to mind is where to place the pond? In most cases, home owners just find an open spot in their yard and immediately start working. The result? They still have their plain old backyard but now with a pond. Home owners have to integrate the pond into their existing landscape. Otherwise, the backyard water pond will fail to compliment the overall design and feel of the property. In situations like these, the presence of a pond can actually diminish the beauty of a homes landscape.
When considering water garden construction, take the time to pick out a design and suitable spot that will flatter the over all water garden design of your yard. Don’t just simply grab that shovel in and dig on the first spot you can find. Do a little research and if you still feel that your own judgment and creative water gardens design is not enough, ask some friends or family members to help you out. Remember two heads are better than one.

]]>

Second, consider the elements of your backyard. If you are considering breeding fish, you may want to rethink placing your pond in a shaded area. Warmth is an important element in maintaining the fish population. If the pond is placed near a tree, you may find yourself in a position where you are constantly cleaning leaves off the pond. The environmental surroundings of your backyard will have a great impact on the appearance and maintenance of the pond.

Last of all, size does matter. You need to make sure that the size of the pond will meet your goals. Some homeowners will build a small pond and place a variety of live aquatic plants and animals in it only to find out that the pond cannot satisfy the necessities of the plants and fish. Another thing to consider carefully is the depth of the pond. This is especially true for landscaping water features in colder climates and the ponds that contain fish. If the pond is built too shallow, it could freeze completely. Proper depth should always be considered when talking about size.

Building landscaping water features in your backyard can definitely make it more attractive. It is a great way to make outdoor living more colorful and enjoyable. If built correctly, it can add a certain luster to the beauty of a property and can ultimately raise the market value of the property. However, if done poorly, your backyard garden pond could become more stressful and ultimately present an incredible nightmare.

Hydrangea for Low Light Gardens

We are recommending you to garnish your shady places of your home garden with Hydrangea, a flowering summer plant, very alike lilac for spring season. Hydrangea macrophylla is the most widely grown species for its large flower heads.

Description

Hydrangea genus includes 70-75 species of flowering plants native of North and South America, especially of southern and eastern Asia.

Hydrangea has beautiful large multicolor inflorescence, which creates a charming view, also lightens the shady corners of your home garden. Therefore Hydrangea must be a part of your lovely garden.

pink hydrangea

A very interesting thing in Hydrangea is that it changes the flowers color in accordance with the soil ph. If you want blue hydrangea flowers, the soil ph has to be acidic and for a pink view, use an alkaline soil ph (strew some limestone or just lime over the garden soil). The neutral soil produces pale cream flowers.

Hydrangea flowering

Hydrangea starts to flower in the middle of April (in this flowering phase, the flowers are white and then turn to pink or blue, depending the soil ph) and blooms at the beginning of June. Hydrangea flowers usually last till the end of June, even July. A mature Hydrangea shrub can keep its flowers even 4-6 weeks. After blooming, cut the flowers to permit to another juvenile stem to flower.

Hydrangea planting

Make a hole which cover well the Hydrangea roots then add some mixed soil, making a hill with 5-7 cm up the garden soil level. Finally water well the planting place, using a sprinkler.

Being a flowering bush, it would be very nice to engrain some grass around Hydrangea. Thus the plant will appear as a colored surprise, a peace of heaven.

Hydrangea care

Hydrangea loves the soil mixture of fertilizer manure and peaty. As we said before, Hydrangea plant feels happy in semi shady places, or in morning sunbeams. As an advice, cover an old fence or a not so pretty corner of your garden planting near Hydrangea. Don’t plant it under a tree, because the roots of the tree will absorb all the natural resources that are helping the Hydrangea too. Plant Hydrangea 1,2 m far of the tree.

hydrangea macrophila

As its name suggest, Hydrangea loves the water. So water it every evening, because the water privation gets the leaves dieing down. The plant needs more water during the buds growing.

When it’s freezing, protect Hydrangea by covering the soil with leaves, more soil or by sticking a glass over the plant. This plant will resist just till -15 degrees centigrade.

Hydrangea pruning

Hydrangea pruning is made in spring. Cut the 1/3 of old fruitless stems, just above the nodule. If it’s not pruned, Hydrangea would keep flowering, but with smaller flowers. And leave the dried flowers on top of their stems, they will protect the new sprigs in winter. Hydrangea paniculata has to be pruned every spring from just above the soil.

Hydrangea propagation

You can propagate your Hydrangea by division in early spring. So separate the roots and you’ll obtain more many Hydrangea plants for your garden. Don’t forget to water them well and they’ll be beautiful and plenty of flowers.

The Hercules Garden Water Fountain at Kew Gardens

Koi Fish Kohaka metallic New Garden Pond Rock Gard Waterfalls Tropical Effect Feeding My Fry Heron Netting Palm Waterfeature water feature natural

One of the most beloved landmarks in England’s Kew Gardens is the Hercules garden water fountain at The Palm House Pond (as it’s properly known, although tourists are allowed to call it just “Palm Pond” or “Hercules Pond”). Although originally built to add beauty and humidity to the next door’s tropical greenhouse (The Palm House), it seemed to the designers that something seemed to be missing from the outdoor garden water fountain. It was a statue.

Say Hello To Hercules

Most of Kew Gardens was built and designed in the 1800′s, when the art of the Greeks and Romans was especially revered. It was the only thing thought to be grand enough to place in an English garden water fountain. The pond was built in 1845, the same time construction was going on at The Palm House.

The sculpture of Hercules wasn’t added until 1853. He is naked in the Greek tradition and wresting with a large, angry serpent (the Greek God Achelus) on top of a large square base (called a plinth). The whole thing is over six feet high. Properly, the statue in the garden water fountain is called “Hercules Fighting Achelus”, but it usually just known as “Herc”.

Francis Joseph Bosio

The sculptor who won the job at placing a heroic image in one of the most visited garden water fountains in the country was Francis Joseph Bosio (1768 – 1845), also known as Baron Francois Joseph Bosio. He was French, which somehow seem puzzling for England’s premier garden water fountain. But then again, the subject matter of the sculpture was Greek. England has always had a bit of an identity crisis.

Bosiso was heavily influenced by Greek and Roman art and most of his surviving works are all in the style and subject matter of Greek and Roman myths. Mostly these were of large nude people and horses. Other sculptures resting in museums around the world include “Hyacinth Awaiting His Turn To Throw The Discus” in The Art Institute of Chicago and “Cupid with a Bow” in St. Petersberg.

However, Bosio is best known for the statues of angels and horses on top of the Arc de Trioumphe du Carrosel. How he exactly won the commission for the Hercules statue in The Palm House Pond’s garden water fountain is not known, but in 1824 Bosio won renown for another Hercules and snake statue called “Hercules and the Lernaen Hydra”. Besides his work, not much is known about Bosio.

Vegetable Gardening Tips – The Basics of Planting Vegetable Gardens

A DIY instructional/information how to video on planting a hedge garden and general hedge information. Appears on www.gardeningcentral.com.au Editing, motion design & post production by Toast Design – www.toastdesign.com.au

Planting vegetable gardens is a very rewarding hobby. Not only is it good for you, because of all the exercise needed to complete the task, but also because of all the vegetables that you’ll enjoy. In order for your vegetables to be pesticide free, it’s important that you plant them yourself. You can grow them anywhere, whether in the midst of a city, or in a more rural setting. But in order to be successful, you need to get the basics of planting correct, as listed in these vegetable gardens tips.

Soil preparation

Number one of our vegetable gardens tips, is that the new gardener needs to learn the importance of soil preparation. This step plays a vital role in whether your vegetable garden will be productive or not, regardless of if you plant in garden boxes or use a part of your backyard. You need to understand that there are three types of soil; sand, clay and silt. Sandy soil is very loose, allowing the plant roots to breathe, as it lets the air easily pass through. Clay soil soaks up water quicker and retains it longer. This makes it perfect for places that receive a lot of sunlight, and are generally hot areas, where the soil dries up quickly. The last type of soil is silt, which is a fine combination of clay and sand particles.

The preparation of soil for your garden is the most important of vegetable garden tips, because it is the foundation of good gardening. The first step is to break up the clumps as you dig up the soil. Be sure and remove any weeds, roots, and rocks you find in this part of the process. Handle the soil to see if you have a good mixture of clay, sand, and silt, before you begin placing vegetable plants in your garden. An even mixture of sand and silt should make up 80% of the soil, while the remaining 20% should be clay. This mixture is to make certain that the roots will not choke or rot, because too much water is being trapped for too long inside the soil. The best way to test whether you have the right composition of soil is to scoop up a handful and form it into a ball. If the soil is able to hold its shape, then you have the right combination. However, if the soil cannot hold its shape, then you probably have too much sand or silt in the mixture. On the other hand, if the soil holds its shape so well that it doesn’t want to crumble when probed, then you need to balance out the clay with sand and silt.

Choose Your Vegetables

While it s OK to choose what kind of vegetables you want to plant ahead of time, plants shouldn’t be purchased until soil preparation is finished. This keeps them from drying out, or becoming root-bound in their small nursery containers, while they wait to be planted. Once soil cultivation is finished, however, its time to choose, purchase, and plant your new vegetables. Another of our vegetable gardens tips is that its important to know that some vegetables don’t grow well, when you place them too close to certain types of other vegetables. For instance, tomatoes and/or squash tend to inhibit the growth of potatoes, if they are planted too close to one another. Be sure and ask your local garden nursery which vegetable plants do well together, and which ones should be kept separate.

Proper Watering Is Crucial

Once you have chosen your vegetables and have planted them in your cultivated soil, proper watering is the next of our vegetable gardens tips. Consistent watering is the name of the game when it comes to vegetables. Soaker hoses are an excellent choice when watering vegetables in a medium to large space. An automatic watering timer is another wise investment if your schedule tends to keep you from watering consistently.

A little patience goes a long way when planting vegetable gardens. Research, experimentation, and experience will help you find the right type of soil for the right type of vegetables, that work best for you. Planting your own garden, watching it grow, and harvesting the produce is very fulfilling. And enjoying fresh vegetables with friends and family, that you grew in your own garden, is a joy. All the hard work will be worth it if you follow these vegetable gardens tips.

A Guide to Building and Planting Vegetable Gardens

The structure of your vegetable garden does not have to be entirely functional but it should also look and feel good. Building some decorative arches and some tomato cages not only makes your garden look good but also helps it produce more crops. After all, there is more to planting vegetable gardens than just cultivating a spot of land.

Function Over Form

The most well known form garden structures are those that are built to sustain plants and give them the room to climb, hold up the weight of its fruits and other plants as well.

Building cages and poles lets you have a vertical garden which boosts your produce per square foot since you’ll have more space to plant in the ground.

Vegetables like cucumbers, peas, peppers and eggplants need lots of garden support. Carrying these vegetables above ground not only will produce better crop it also protects it from insects found in the soil. Plus, the fruits will be less likely to rot if planted this way. Building other support structures like stakes and cages will help in making your plants grow stronger and taller.

Choose Your Structure

If you plan to shop for things for your garden online or in a garden store, you’ll notice how many choices there are when it comes to garden structures. A great online garden resource is a company called Garden Supply Company. Not only do they have a mail-order catalogue, they make trellises for plants like cucumbers that serve as a shade to neighboring plants, tomato cages, spiral supports, bean towers, maypoles and others.

Garden structures may vary especially in terms of form and function because they not only are very supportive of plants it also makes your garden look good. The best kind of garden is not only beautiful, but also enhances the health of the vegetables planted there.

Form over Function

There are so many options when it comes to building your vegetable garden especially if you’re purpose is purely aesthetic. You can build ornaments like arches, trellises or archways to beautify your garden. You can even build walls or doorways to surround your garden for a more visual appeal.

For gardens like these, you can decorate them with plants aside from vegetables. You can plant beautiful flowers to cover your trellis but choose flowers that are sun friendly and attract helpful insects.

An example is trumpet flowers, which are not only beautiful but they attract bees for your vegetable garden. Since you also want to attract helpful creatures, you can build a bird bath or a bird house in your garden. If you’re particularly into organic gardening, the birds can certainly help eliminate pests

As long as you keep your garden attractive to birds and other helpful insects, they will spend a lot of time in your garden and repay you by eating away harmful pests.

Supporting Your Plants

Building plant supports are essential garden structures which is why it’s necessary to use them in the proper way to maximize results. This does not mean building stakes or cages in the ground and leave the plant to grow on its own.

There are other materials like plant ties, jute cords or twines which you can use to tie up your plant to the cages or poles but don’t tie them too tight.

Another great support when it comes to planting vegetables gardens are stakes. Make sure to drive them properly into the ground and space them a little further from your main plant to avoid hitting its roots.
